What is a wall-mounted dip bar?

Pick by the wall you have. A bare wall gets the D8 ($525), the BenchK dip bar that needs no ladder. If a BenchK wall bar (also sold as stall bars or a Swedish ladder) is already up, or on your list, the DB1 ($629) hangs on its rungs at the height you want and lifts off when you need the ladder clear.

Both are made in Poland from powder-coated steel, with polyurethane armrests and back support, and each weighs 24 lb (11 kg). BenchK ladders and the DB1 are commercial gymnastic equipment, certified by LBM in Poland to the European standards PN-EN 12346 and PN-EN 913, and studios such as Praxis Pilates in New York train on BenchK wall bars. You can put the same equipment on a wall at home. For a pull-up bar on a BenchK ladder, see our wall-mounted pull-up bars.

How do the D8 and the DB1 compare?

The D8 costs $525 and needs a wall at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick. The DB1 costs $629 and needs a BenchK Series 2 or Series 7 ladder, on the wall or on order.

Mounting, size, rating and warranty figures come from the D8 and DB1 instruction manuals, linked on each product page. Weight and colors come from the product pages. The DB1 manual says to attach it to BenchK ladders only.

02The D8 2-in-1

How does the D8 mount on a bare wall?

The D8 comes with four wall hooks, two for each height. On the lower pair it is a dip bar with polyurethane armrests and back support. Lift it onto the upper pair and it becomes a pull-up bar, so one bare wall covers dips and pull-ups.

One template in the box marks all four holes. You decide where it goes on the wall, and once the hooks are on, the dip height stays put. The bar is 46¼ in (1175 mm) wide, so measure the wall before you order.

The wall has to be at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick. The plugs and screws are yours to choose, because the right ones depend on what the wall is made of. Mounting details below.

03The DB1 dip station

How does the DB1 hang on a BenchK ladder?

The DB1 rides on the ladder. Its upper and lower hooks sit 10⅞ in (275 mm) apart, the same distance as one BenchK rung to the next, so it drops onto any two neighboring rungs. All four hooks are felt-lined and leave no marks on the beech.

Move it a rung up for a taller user or a rung down for a shorter one, or lift it off when you want the ladder clear. It fits the steel-frame Series 2 and Series 7 ladders, not the all-beech Series 1, and its manual says to attach it to BenchK ladders only. The grip posts stand 19⅞ in (505 mm) apart.

It comes in black (DB1B) and white (DB1W), $629 each, and eight ladder models include one. See which sets.

·Ladder sets with the DB1

Which BenchK ladder sets include the DB1?

Eight ladder models do. Each comes in black with the DB1B or in white with the DB1W, and the VMS carries a DB1B too. Every set holds one person up to 330 lb (150 kg). Check the ceiling before you pick a frame: Series 7 needs 98½ in (250 cm) and Series 2 needs 94½ in (240 cm). Under an 8 ft (96 in) ceiling, that means a Series 2 set.

What does each one need from your wall?

The D8 goes on the wall itself. Its manual asks for a vertical wall strong enough for the bar and the user, at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick, and leaves the plugs and screws to you. It says nothing about wood-stud walls, so we won’t promise the D8 works on one. Contact us before you drill.

The DB1 has no wall fixings of its own: it hangs on the ladder, and the ladder is what you bolt to the wall. That hardware is sold separately because it depends on the wall. Masonry at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick takes the PS8 kit ($89) for Series 2 or the PS12 kit ($99) for Series 7. A wood-stud wall needs the WHB+S8 or WHW+S8 wall holder ($289), which spreads the load across several studs. Drywall alone can’t hold a ladder.

Both manuals ask for two habits: check the fixings before every workout, and train over an exercise mat.

Wall-mounted dip bars: common questions

Can you mount dip bars straight to a wall?
Yes, with the BenchK D8 2-in-1: four wall hooks at two heights, with a dip bar on the lower pair and a pull-up bar on the upper pair. The wall must be at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick. Plugs and screws are not included, because the right ones depend on the wall.
Do I need wall bars to use the DB1 dip station?
Yes. The DB1 hangs on two rungs of a BenchK Series 2 or Series 7 ladder, and its manual says to attach it to BenchK ladders only. It does not fit the all-beech Series 1, and on a bare wall the D8 is the one that needs no ladder.
How much weight do the dip bars hold?
The D8 and the DB1 are each rated for a user up to 330 lb (150 kg), one person at a time. Both carry a 10-year warranty on the metal parts and 24 months on the other parts.
Can the D8 go on a wood-stud wall?
The D8 manual doesn't say. It asks for a vertical wall strong enough for the bar and the user, at least 4.7 in (120 mm) thick, and never mentions studs, so contact us before you mount a D8 on one.
Can I change the height of the DB1?
Yes. Lift it off and hang it on a higher or lower pair of rungs; the hooks are felt-lined, so they don't mark the beech. It also comes off completely when you want the ladder clear.
Can children use the D8 or the DB1?
Not under 3, both manuals say. Children from 3 to 14 may use them with an adult supervising, and only one person may be on the bar at a time.
Should I buy the D8 or the DB1?
Pick the D8 ($525) if the wall is bare and you want dips and pull-ups from one bar. Pick the DB1 ($629) if you have a BenchK Series 2 or Series 7 ladder, or plan to buy one: it moves to any rung pair and shares the ladder with a pull-up bar and bench. A set such as the 732 ($1,869) includes the ladder, the PB3 pull-up bar and the DB1.
